Sioux Position at Baker's Battle on the Yellowstone

This image is of one of two major Sioux positions at Baker's Battle on the Yellowstone, August 14, 1872. Note the line of cartridge casings represented by pin flags within approximately 4 to 6 feet below the crest of the hill. This position is indicative a typical Sioux position. The position affords an unseen avenue of approach, maneuverability, excellent protection, high ground, and adequate horse holding area in close proximity.
